Waters for
Tomorrow

Overview

The renewable water resources in the MENA region are among the lowest globally. Most MENA countries face a chronic imbalance between available water supply and increasing water demand. This imbalance is expected to worsen due to rapid population growth, economic development, and climate change unless substantial measures are implemented to augment water supply and manage demand effectively.

Water scarcity in the Middle East is primarily driven by natural factors such as limited rainfall and high temperatures, as well as human activities including the overexploitation of groundwater and inefficient irrigation practices. Groundwater, a critical water source in the region, is being depleted at an alarming rate. Climate change exacerbates the situation by increasing the frequency and severity of droughts. Concerns about dams and their impact on water flow are also prevalent, and many existing desalination plants face technical issues that require maintenance and upgrades, particularly as they approach the end of their operational lifespan. Read more..

Objectives

Exchange expertise among stakeholders in Arab countries in the desalination and water reuse sectors, showcasing successful experiences to drive the advancement of water desalination technology and promote sustainable development.

Encourage & Enhance research cooperation and technical innovation between research bodies in the Arab region and internationally, fostering collaborations in specialized studies that address regional environmental needs. Establish communication channels to unify research efforts in water desalination and reuse.

Promote private sector investment in water desalination and reuse projects by presenting appealing opportunities for investment in project construction, operation, and maintenance. Encourage private sector engagement to drive the growth of sustainable water initiatives.

Contribute to the transfer and localization of the technique in the Arab region by urging specialized desalination companies to establish manufacturing facilities within the region. This initiative aims to enhance technology accessibility and expertise in desalination and water reuse practices..

Develop the skills of workers in seawater desalination and water reuse through training and qualification programs, ensuring knowledge transfer to nurture a new generation of engineers and technicians in the field.

Explore the feasibility of utilizing alternative energy sources in desalination operations and assess the progress made in implementing sustainable energy practices in Arab countries. Identify opportunities to integrate renewable energy into desalination processes for enhanced environmental sustainability and operational efficiency.
